My One-Word Theme for 2025
Inspired by Gretchen Rubin, I choose an overarching theme for each upcoming year.

This is my 8th time choosing a theme for the new year, inspired by happiness guru Gretchen Rubin. My words have previously included Routine, Learn, Grounded, Prepare, Balance, and Center.
I skipped this tradition last year as no word really resonated with me, but this year, something quite serendipitous happened!
My friend Hannah brings a tarot deck every time we cold plunge. This time, it was for the full moon. We sat by the stream, with only a candle shedding its light on the cards. The unicorns spoke and confirmed what my intuition had been telling me for the past few days as the card I pulled read:
"Creative - Draw, paint, think, and act in creative ways".
There was no fighting it, my word for 2025 had to be CREATE.

This year, I really want to explore my creativity. As listed in my 25 in 2025, I have a few projects in the pipeline.
I also shouldn't be surprised by the fact that the new software I'm learning how to use is named... Procreate!
I feel like the money-making aspect of my life is pretty much all dialed in, so I want to focus on side quests. I'm not the kind of person who wants to turn their passion into a job so I'm not pressuring myself to turn my creative endeavors into profitable businesses but I feel like achievable goals would help me progress.
Here's how I'm imagining my word could inspire me:
- I want to learn how to use Procreate, design digital products, and turn a few into tangible goods and objects.
- I want to create, rather than replicate, meaning less pattern following (in sewing, for example) and more intuitive and inventive making.
- Less thinking, more doing. I'd like to spend less time planning, gathering supplies, and waiting for the perfect time, and more time doing, experimenting, trying, and even failing!
- I want to enjoy the process and focus less on the result. I sometimes suffer from the social media pressure to only show the finished product, only if I succeed, which tends to prevent me from trying something just for the sake of it.

Now, it's your turn, if you had to choose one word, or a short phrase, to sum up what you want to focus on in the new year, what would it be?
