My Number One Tip to Shop for (Vintage or Second-Hand) Clothing Online
Measure once, buy once.

There's nothing more frustrating than ordering a pair of pants online, only to find that they are not the right fit.
After swearing off shopping online, and trying to tailor locally thrifted jeans without too much success, I decided it was time to take some time and take proper measurements to guarantee that I wouldn't have to return another pair of jeans that fit my butt but not my waist.
My number one tip is to have your measurements on hand... and I found the perfect tool: the Measurements app!

It might not be the most fun experience for all people. If numbers trigger you, measure yourself in a system of measurement you're not super familiar with. The imperial system is still quite blurry for me (I still think in centimeters rather than inches), so I used it to measure myself. No judgment is attached to these numbers.
You can also enlist a friend to help you take certain measurements or take them yourself.
I haven't updated this data in a while, since I generally sew my own pants, and also because after I took my measurements last winter and did some Internet digging, I finally found a brand that fits my hip-to-waist ratio like a glove and invested in pieces I will keep for a long time.

Now I know what the ideal rise is for me and what inseam I like best for my silhouette.
I hope you'll find this tip useful, let me know how it helped, and happy shopping!
